Building Homes that Make a Difference
Blan Builders is a proud builder of ENERGY STAR rated homes. Should you like, we can even build you a certified ENERGY STAR home. What does this mean? ENERGY STAR homes are built to perform 30% more efficient than the typical new home today and substantially better than an older home. How does this affect the homeowner? By reducing monthly energy bills, for one. Also, there is a one-time $1000 tax-deduction for couples that have an ENERGY STAR home. Home energy use accounts for nearly 17 percent of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and 15 percent of energy consumption nationwide. So, by owning an ENERGY STAR certified home, you could save money on monthly bills and feel good about it too. It’s the best of both worlds!

Products that Make a Difference
Appliances
Did you know that the average home spends about $1,900 on energy costs every year? Change to appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR, and you can save $80 a year in energy costs, while saving the environment.
When buying an appliance, remember that it has two price tags: what you pay to take it home and what you pay for the energy and water it uses. ENERGY STAR qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10–50% less energy and water than standard models. The money you save on your utility bills can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient ENERGY STAR model. www.energystar.gov/appliances
ENERGY STAR appliances include:
Heating and Cooling
As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. So making smart decisions about your home’s heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills — and your comfort. Take these steps to increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. For more information, see our Guide to Energy Efficient Heating & Cooling
(708KB).
Home Electronics
Residential electricity use by consumer electronic products is responsible for more than 25% of household electricity use.* Home electronic products use energy when they’re off to power features like clock displays and remote controls. Those that have earned the ENERGY STAR use as much as 60% less energy to perform these functions, while providing the same performance at the same price as less-efficient models. Less energy means you pay less on your energy bill.

Lighting
Changing the world starts with simple actions. When you replace light bulbs or entire light fixtures in your home with ones that have earned the government’s ENERGY STAR, you help preserve energy resources and reduce the risks of global warming while saving money and time buying and changing lights in your home.
Office Equipment
Office Equipment — from computers and monitors to imaging equipment, such as printers and copiers — that has earned the ENERGY STAR helps eliminate wasted energy through special energy-efficient designs. They use less energy to perform regular tasks, and when not in use, automatically enter a low-power mode. 2007 brings new ENERGY STAR specifications for office and imaging equipment. This means it will be more difficult for computers, copiers, fax machines, mailing machines, multifunction devices (MFDs), printers, and scanners to earn the ENERGY STAR. www.energystar.gov/office
